Pushing 1 year on the net
I hope that everyone had a pleasant and safe New Years Eve. Mine was off the chain yo. My friend Owen and I ended up driving an hour away to pick up an ice luge, last minute, given someone dropped the ball big time. My New Years Resolution is to update MangoOut.com tons and take it to the next level. And away I go.
Over the weekend, Oprah Winfrey is opening her long-awaited school in South Africa today. The $40 million Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls, just south of Johannesburg, is a promise that Oprah made to Nelson Mandela some six years ago. 152 underprivileged girls were chosen from approximately 3,500 applicants. The girls are 11 and 12 years old and must show academic and leadership potential as well as have a household income of no more than $787 per month. Celebrities are on hand for the opening of the school today, though Oprah is keeping the guest list quite private. Wow Oprah, six years? Did you have problems coming up with the funds. God, Oprah has more money than Fergie has lady lumps.
What is a New Year without Brit-brit news. Spear’s manager this morning is denying that Spears passed out drunk and needed to be carried out of the New Year’s Eve party she was hosting at Pure at Caesar’s Palace in Las Vegas. Spears reportedly fell asleep in the club’s V.I.P. lounge shortly after leading the countdown to 2007. Her manager maintains that Spears was not drunk, but that she was tired and falling asleep due to travel and keeping up a hectic schedule. Wow, maybe it was the Oxycontin she had stashed underneath her left breast.
A couple of celebrity weddings to report from over the long weekend. Comedic actor Jay Mohr married actress Nikki Cox. Supermodel Kate Moss and drug-addicted Babyshambles singer, Pete Doherty held a wedding ceremony in Thailand, but their union is not yet legal. I am a big Jay Mohr fan and Nikki Cox is damn hot. I am totally over Kate and Pete. He has more issues than Rolling Stone Magazine. Ok, 2 more stories to report. I know it was kind of a slow couple of news days.
The Rolling Stones are the most successful live act in terms of ticket sales in North America for the second consecutive year, beating out competition from Barbara Streisand. The band sold $138.5 million worth of tickets from 39 gigs in 2006, whereas Streisand earned $92.5 million from 20 concerts. According to trade magazine Pollstar, country couple Tim McGraw and Faith Hill made $88.8 million, while Madonna grossed $85.9 million.
And finally,
Singers Jessica Simpson and John Mayer have once again been seen together in New York, though they still deny being a couple.
This time they were seen at the jewelry counter at Barneys on Madison Avenue, where it looked like Mayer was buying Simpson a gift, The New York Post reported. The two were giggling and dancing in front of the glass display case, and Mayer was also holding Simpson’s hands in his own, the Post said. They looked very happy together, said one of the onlookers. They were having fun and joking around.
